Climate-Tech to Feature the Brand New Lennox EL296V Furnace

Lennox is upgrading one of theirlongtime furnace models from a 40 inch model to a 33 inch model andClimate-Tech will provide it's customers the option of owning and installing what is sure to be one of Lennox's flagshipmodels.

The new 33 inch version has a shortercabinet which allows for this particular model of furnace to fit in placesthe previous 40 inch model might not have fit into.

Another new featured of the furnace isits variable speed motor which uses two-thirds less power thanprevious models that used a standard motor. Therefore, lowing yourutility bills.

“This is a significant addition tothe Lennox furnace line as it provides substantial advantages inefficiency and savings,” Justin Luber, senior product manager inresidential heating for Lennox, said. “The EL296V is a substantialimprovement over its predecessor.

“It has improved energy efficiencyfrom 95-96 percent, which means that 96 cents of every dollar spentis going to heat the home.”

The EL296V's predecessor was one of themost efficient furnaces on the market and the new model only improveson that efficiency.

Q. Is this a new technology?
A. No. Europe, Asia and South America, where energy costs are more expensive than here in North America, have been using tankless water heaters for 75 years. Bosch Water Heating has been selling and supporting tankless water heaters in the United States since 1979. However, most Americans are just now learning of this technology and its benefits.

Q. Can I fill a hot tub with a tankless water heater?

A. Yes. Because tankless water heaters provide an endless supply of hot water, you can fill a tub of any size. It is only a question of time, meaning that our larger units can fill a tub faster than our smaller units. Keep in mind that some tubs draw water at high flow rates, so it may be necessary to limit the flow so that the tankless water heater can adequately heat the water that is being called for.

Q. How do I properly size a tankless water heater for my home?
A. You need to choose the model that can deliver the volume of hot water to meet your needs. The best method for sizing this type of water heater is to know how many showers each model can run simultaneously. We have models that can run either one or two showers at a time. And remember, a tankless water heater can deliver endless hot water, shower after shower. See our Sizing Guide to determine which tankless water heater would be right for you. Any home with up to two baths and 4-6 occupants requires the 950ES.

Q. What limitations do tankless water heaters have?
A. Because this type of water heater heats the water as you use it, the volume of hot water that it can deliver is directly correlated to the amount of its energy input. Using larger burners or heating elements in the unit, will result in a higher volume of hot water delivered. Today tankless water heaters come in various sizes to suit most homes’ needs. Even if you need to be operating multiple showers at once, tankless water heaters can keep up (see Sizing Guide to choose the right model for you).

Q. What if I have very hard water?
A. Since tankless water heaters do not store hot water, minerals have less of an opportunity to settle out of the water column and build up inside the heat exchanger. Additionally, the flow of hot water through the coiled heat exchanger flushes the product each time hot water is used. The use of a water softener is fine with a tankless water heater, and is recommended if you commonly experience hard water problems in your home.

Q. Will one tankless water heater service my entire house?
A. Yes. You must choose the proper model to suit your home’s hot water needs, which is based upon the maximum flow of hot water you need at any one time (see Sizing Guide to choose the right model for you). We sell tankless water heaters that are capable of handling one shower at a time and others that can sustain a maximum of two showers operating at the same time.

Q. Will I still get the hot shower I’m used to now?
A. Yes, provided you buy the right tankless heater for you (see our Sizing Guide to find the right model). Tankless water heaters are able to function at a variety of temperatures that you can choose, and can produce hot water at the same flow rate as your standard single-headed shower provides now.

Q. Are there other benefits of a tankless water heater?
A. There are many advantages of having a tankless water heater in your home. Besides the money savings, endless hot water and smaller impact on the environment, a tankless water heater:

Is very small and can hang on the wall, thereby saving you valuable floor space.

Is designed with replaceable parts and is built with such materials as copper, stainless steel, and aluminum so as to last a lifetime. Energy savings is only one segment of savings—with proper care this could be the only water heater one needs in a lifetime.

Is almost entirely recyclable, so if you ever decide to replace it, it doesn’t have to go to the landfill.

Is less prone to develop a corrosive leak like a storage tank water heater, saving you from expensive water damage in your home.

Note: A tankless water heater can leak if it is exposed to freezing temperatures or has a manufacturing defect.

Maintains its efficiency throughout the lifetime of the unit. Storage tank water heaters decrease in efficiency over time due to mineral build-up inside the tank. This is due to the fact that storage tank water heaters store hot water, giving those minerals a chance to settle out and bake from the heat onto the walls of the tank, and onto the heating element in electric models, thereby reducing heat transfer.

Q. Can it really provide an endless supply of hot water?
A. Yes. Because storage tank water heaters store a finite amount of water, when that amount is used up your shower goes cold and you have to wait for the heater to heat the water back up (this is known as recovery time). Because a tankless water heater heats the water as it passes through the heater, you can never run out, provided flow limitations are not exceeded (see our Sizing Guide to find the right model for you).

Our top models will handle up to two major applications at once, such as a dishwasher and washing machine or two showers running at the same time. The best tankless water heaters will pump out 5-6 gallons per minute, or over 300 gallons per hour - and you never run out. An extra-large capacity 80 gallon tank water heater runs dry in about 15 minutes by comparison.

Q. How much money can I save?
A. Depending on which model of tankless water heater you purchase, and what size storage tank you have now, and if it runs on gas or electricity, you could save anywhere from 5% to 69% off your hot water heating bill. How? Most homes use hot water for a cumulative total of about one hour per day, yet they typically keep 40 or 50 gallons (oftentimes more) of water hot 24 hours a day. Having a system that eliminates the storage and heats water only as you use it can dramatically reduce your energy consumption.

A 2 year study of tankless verse tank water heaters was completed by the Brookhaven National Laboratory just last year and has found an average savings of 37% for all the different heaters available and a top end savings of 56% for condensing heaters. (Center for Energy and Environment; Brookhaven National Laboratory 8/20/2010)

Q. What are the advantages of using a tankless water heater?
A. Because a tankless water heater turns on when you open a hot water faucet and turns off when you close the faucet, the energy that is consumed is only for the hot water that is being used. Since there is no storage of water, and thus no constant heating and re-heating of stored water, you’re not wasting energy heating water when you don’t need it, such as when you’re sleeping or not at home. This energy savings translates to dollar savings for you and reduced impact on our environment. Furthermore, since a tankless water heater heats the water as you use it, you can have an endless supply of hot water, provided you size the unit appropriately.

Q. How can a tankless water heater heat water instantly?
A. When you open a faucet, the flow of the water triggers the heater to turn on. Whether you use gas or electricity, the powerful gas burners or electrical elements will turn on, rapidly heating the water as it passes through the unit. The water is heated instantly, and the time it takes to obtain hot water is directly related to the distance the hot water has to travel from the water heater to where hot water is being used. The burners or elements then shut down when you shut off the hot water. The energy that is consumed is only for the hot water that is being used.

Q. What is a tankless water heater?
A. Most people in North America currently use a storage tank water heater to provide hot water in their homes. A storage tank water heater keeps water hot 24 hours a day, even while you’re at work or sleeping. A tankless water heater, on the other hand, does not store hot water. It heats the water as you use it.

Q. What is the payback of the typical Bosch Tankless Heater?
A. We will use the BOSCH 950ES NG in our example as well as a 50 Gal Standard Vent Bradford/White Hot Water Tank and the Bradford/White 50 Gal Sidewall vented hot water tank

The difference between the 950 and the Std. Vent 50Gal. is: $2,173.00 If we base the typical savings at 40% when using tankless over Std HWT units we will typically save $14.00 per month or $168.00 per year. Using this number ($168.00) per year our payback is 12.94 years.

The difference between the 950 and the sidewall vented HWT is: $1,255.00; If we use the same savings of $168.00 per year then the pay back for the 950 is 7.47 years.

With a typical lifespan of 25 years the savings will mount quickly.

The above example is not including any increase in gas cost and is based on a average natural gas cost of $11.00/MCF which includes all taxes and delivery charges.

Climate-Tech News: Freon (R-22) Prices Skyrocketing, Change is Imminent

Changes are occurring in the world of freon, also known as Refrigerant-22 or R-22, which is the coolant used in the majority of air conditioning units.

Per a release from an unnamed manufacturer of R-22 on Jan. 5.

“As of today, no producer or importer has the legal right to manufacture or import R-22 for refrigeration or air conditioning use. Under such circumstances the EPA is expected to issue ‘non enforcement’ letters to allow business continuity. Consequently, given the current absence of non-enforcement letters and the possibility of significantly higher than previously expected reductions in allocation rights, (company x) must now evaluate the impact such a reduction may have on our ability to meet customer demands.”

This means the Environmental Protection Agency is cutting back on the amount of R-22 that can be imported into the U.S. An initial government projection was to allow 55-80 million pounds of R-22 into the country in 2012, it is being rumored the EPA might not even let the bottom line number of 50 million into the country. As a comparison, in 2011 approximately 100 million pounds of R-22 came into the states.

What does this mean?

It will be harder and more expensive to cool your home in the hot summer months, due to this reduction of coolant coming into the U.S. moving forward.

This also means it is time to start thinking about changing over to more readily available coolant, called R-410a. If you don't consider the costs of changing over to the less expensive and higher efficient coolant, then you'll only be paying an arm and a leg for the older R-22, which has jumped in price from a reported 40-60 percent across the United States.

There is no escaping this increase in price since it is being regulated by the U.S. Government. Your only answer is to change.
